Evaluation 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For this coursework we created a documentary on learning to drive, in order to make it professional and similar to the other documentaries we followed the codes and conventions of real media products. Our documentary consists of different interviews, montages of images and relevant cut a ways.
The interviews
For the interviews in our documentary we followed the codes and conventions as we have the interviewee either positioned left or right, being filmed in medium close up or mid shot.
We conducted five interviews firstly;
· Glyn Roberts – workman for Brandon Tool Hire
· Angela Lloyd prince – experience driver
· Chris Kelly – owner of driving school
· Laura woods – new driver
· Charlotte west – new driver

The interviews with Angela, Laura and Charlotte, we filmed with the same relevant Mis en scene that does show more detail and gives more insight to the questions being asked because they are each sitting in the driving seat in their car facing the passengers sit where the camera was positioned. The codes and conventions state that the positioning of the interviewer is important if the interviewer is right of the frame then the interviewee is left of the frame and vice versa so we ensured that we were in the right position. They are filmed in medium close up and they all answer the same questions although we followed the codes and conventions by editing out the questions it shows that they have read back the question so their answer is easy to understand.
These interviews do show that they have sat as close to the camera as possible when being interviewed but they don’t look directly into the camera but at us who are positioned behind the camera on the opposite side to them. For these interviews we have also followed the codes and conventions of framing and the rule of the thirds eye line where the interviewee is roughly a third of the way down the screen.
The interviews are not filmed with a light source behind them because we want a clear image of the interviewee and for them not to be shadowed by the light.
Lastly all of these interviewees are constantly sitting down and we edited the order of these by putting each individual answer next to each other to show comparisons between them all.
The order goes Laura to Angela and finishes on Charlotte. The audience will know who the interviewees are as we have followed conventions by using graphics to anchor who the person is on screen and their relevance of them to the documentary.
Chris Kelly interview
For this interview we travelled to the main chris Kelly buildingto film our interview with him. This meant we had a brilliant and relevant mis en scene of him sat at his desk surrounded by papers pens, computer etc with a plaque to show customers who he was so this fits with the codes and conventions because the mis en scene is relevant and gives the audience an insight to provide more information.
After setting up the equipment we filmed him to the right of the frame, constanly sitting down looking to the left of the camera which follows conventions as he does not directly look straight into it. When we filmed the interview there was not light source behind him as his desk was positioned at the back of the shop so this ensured another code and convention.
Thwe interview was good as he ws not to far away from the camera and the he follows the rules of thirds overall all the codes and conventions are followed.
By this interview in our documentary we have followed the codes and conventions by creating graphics to link chris kelly with our documenatray and show his connection with our documenatry. when we conducted this interview we asked he followed conventions as he looked at the person who was asking the questions, which we have edited out and we made sure that we where in the right position so codes and convention are followed .
cutaways are used during this interview as we have got video and still footage of the shop, leaflets and chris kelly driving school cars on the road.

Glyns interview
For this interview we followed the codes and conventions firstly by creating a relevant mis sen scene. The mis en scene was outside with the interviewee surrounde dby planks of wood to highlight his job. Glyn is positioned left of the camera where he does not look directly at the camera but at the interviewer who is the right hand side of the camera which shows we where the right side of the frame. glyn is standing as close to the camer aas possible and is filmed in medium close up. there is no light source behind this interviewee only a pebblestone wall, the light for the interview is natural light. Glyn is not sitting but standing when anwsering the questions which we have edited out. We decided during editing that we did not have enough space for Glyn in our documenatary but we did follow all the codes and conventions during this part of the coursework. if we had used we would have used graphics to anchor him to our documenatry and used the cut aways we filmed of his workvan, the company logo and the safety signs on his van.

Newspaper advert
For our newspaper advert we used the programme Adobe Phtoshop because of all the graphics and tools can help the work look brilliant.
Firstly we followed the conventions by creating an a4 landscape project so it could be scaled to different sizes and maybe a billboard. Then we took a number of images in filming to get a variety of pictures that we could use as our main striking image, which we decied that it was towo hands tied in chains with a padlock so we could super impose an l plate on the padlock to convey being locked up/weighted down by learning to drive which sums up the programme. after we were happy with the main image and the editing to it we had done which was using the distort tool so the l plate fitted into the padlock, with the help of the paint tool to add a liitle colour to the more difficult places ont he padlock, we added the title which is First gear. this conveys learning to drive as first suggests first time learning to drive but is also a car feature. to follow we added the slogan 'are you a loser' we conveys learning to drive is a race and that its something to be finished, after this we adde dthe scheduling details including the channel datre and time. lastly we added a big logo of itv 1 edited in photoshop to show the target audienc eand the channel of our documentary. so here we followed all the codes and conventions to create a professional newspaper advert.

Radio advert
we followed the codes and conventions of radio adverts firstly by using extracts from our programme which were parts of our voxpop where pepople share their opinions on what they think of young drivers and also some extracts from our interviews. for this we used one question which cross cuts between them. we ensured we had a constant voiceover throughout which was a member of staff from the english department called mrs walton. Hopefully the advert will intrigue the audience because we have targeted them pacifically by making the tone informal and friendly along with our choice of voiceover. our radio advert shows scheduling information including the channel, time ,title, slogan and day. A music bed is used aswell in parts that are approiate, the music bed we used was the green light instrumental by rolldeep as it is relevant to driving. overall our advert is between 30 to 40 seconds long.
